Azaso, noun

Origin:
Acronym formed on Azanian Students’ Organization.
A grouping founded in 1979 to represent Black university students, and later affiliated to the United Democratic Front (see UDF noun2).
Note:
Although initially seen by some as a replacement for the banned SASO, this organization opposed Black Consciousness; to avoid confusion on this point, it was renamed Sansco in December 1986.
1980 Survey of Race Rel. 1979 (S.A.I.R.R.) 546In November a national organisation representing the interests of black university students, the Azanian Students’ Organisation (AZASO) was formed.
1981 Voice 29 July 3The Azanian Students Association (Azaso), officially switched from the Black consciousness philosophy to that of non-racial ‘progressive and democrat’ stance, at the weekend.

1987 J. Dowson in Argus 1 Sept. 11Known until last December as the Azanian Students’ Organisation (Azaso), Sansco, like Nusas, is a UDF affiliate and supports the principles contained in the Freedom Charter.
