Editorial policy
The dictionary published on this website is compiled on historical principles, documenting South African English language usage chronologically across three centuries (see About the Dictionary for more information).
Its editorial policy is based ultimately on frequency of use of South African English words according to available evidence, with supporting citations shown in their historical context. The project aims, within available resources, to offer its readers a representation of the South African variety of English that is as accurate, authentic and comprehensive as possible. Some source material represented in the dictionary may therefore reflect attitudes or language usage not considered appropriate or acceptable today. These attitudes or uses of terms are not condoned by the DSAE and do not reflect the views of the DSAE or its funding partners. The DSAE accepts no liability or responsibility for the content accessible in the dictionary, including the manner in which the content is interpreted or used, or the results of such use.
Proprietary names
This dictionary includes some words which are, or are asserted to be, proprietary names or trade marks. Their inclusion does not imply that they have acquired for legal purposes a non-proprietary or general significance nor any other judgement concerning their legal status. In cases where the editors have some evidence that a word is used as a proprietary name or trade mark this is indicated, but no judgement concerning the legal status of such words is made or implied thereby, and accordingly the editors disclaim any liability arising from the inclusion of such words.
