AfrikaansShow more Afrikaans, elliptical for Oranje Vrystaat the Orange Free State, a Boer republic during the 19th century, from 1910 one of the four provinces of South Africa, and since 1994 one of the country’s nine provinces.
A. interjection Used as an (often ironical) exclamation of exaltation, triumph, approbation, or encouragement; a rallying call. Hence Vrystaat noun, a cry of ‘Vrystaat!’; attributive, enthusiastically South African.
