The short rope or thong by which a team of oxen is led; fore-tow; also called tou (sense 1).
1822 W.J. Burchell Trav. I. 174I obtained..a voortouw (fore-rope) or short trektouw, which..would be required occasionally to hook on at the end of the draw-rope, whenever it was necessary to employ a larger team than ten or twelve oxen.
1968 K. McMagh Dinner of Herbs 8Her father had himself taken the ‘voor-touw’ — the thong looped around the horns of the leading oxen, and led the span to keep it upon its course.
