Afrikaans, South African Dutch, DutchShow more Afrikaans (earlier South African Dutch stokvisch) from Dutch transferred use of stokvis a name applied to the European hake; according to some sources, the name (literally ‘stick fish’) arose because that fish was dried on sticks.
