A style of popular music in which traditional or neo-traditional African (especially Zulu) songs, played in a rapid tempo and set to mbaqanga and marabi rhythms and instrumentation, are sung in the groaning style, (usually) by a male singer, backed by a three- or four-woman chorus. The style became popular in the 1960s.

CoplanUrbanization of African Performing Arts. 379[Rupert] Bopape built on..vocal mbaqanga..to create a new style called simanje-manje...The new music, pioneered by Joyce Mokgatusi’s Dark City Sisters and kwela-mbaqanga innovator Aaron Lerole, showed less American influence. It..set traditional and neo-traditional songs to urban rhythms derived from marabi and tsaba-tsaba, and was played at a rapid tempo by backup groups consisting of three reed instruments plus electric bass, guitar, and drum-set.
