1982 Sunday Times 18 July 26Verligte and verkrampte Afrikaners have been with us for a long time. But now we’ll have to get used to yet another category: the oorbeligtes (literal translation: those who have been excessively illuminated). 1983 Sunday Times 30 Jan. 28With Herman Giliomee going to occupy a chair at UCT (a loss to Maties, this, but then it tends to be uncomfortable with oorbeligtes), Ikeys will have one of the strongest political departments around.
1985 S. Uys in Cape Times 12 JulyThe verligtes operate from the Afrikaner power base (unlike the oorbeligtes who are outside that power base). They are seen to be engaged in the realpolitik of South Africa whereas the liberal’s public image is of being outside it.
1985 Frontline Nov.A battle royal has been raging in Die Burger between verligtes and ‘oorbeligtes’ in Afrikanerdom.
1987 Sunday Times 8 Mar. 22The rebellious Matie academics — sarcastically described as ‘oorbeligtes’ by more stick-in-the-mud elements — have devised their own response to conservative crititcs. ‘Onderbeligtes’ is the word they use to describe those who still dwell in the dead-end streets of the NP.
