‖oorbeligte, noun
- Origin:
- AfrikaansShow more Afrikaans, oor over + beligte illuminated.
see quotation 1982. Cf. verligte noun.
1982 Sunday Times 18 July 26Verligte and verkrampte Afrikaners have been with us for a long time. But now we’ll have to get used to yet another category: the oorbeligtes (literal translation: those who have been excessively illuminated). It is used, somewhat pejoratively, to describe verligtes who have become so enlightened that they are adjudged by your average run-of-the-mill verligte to be beyond the Afrikaner pale.
1987 Sunday Times 8 Mar. 22The rebellious Matie academics — sarcastically described as ‘oorbeligtes’ by more stick-in-the-mud elements — have devised their own response to conservative crititcs. ‘Onderbeligtes’ is the word they use to describe those who still dwell in the dead-end streets of the NP.
see quotation 1982.
