Smith Common Names 271Kalossie (kalotje), A general name for several species of Ixia and Lachenalia...The vernacular name, which is derived from ‘Kalotje’, was originally applied to only a section of the Ixiae, the flowers of which with their narrow tube and bowl-shaped perianth suggest an olden day type of skull-cap.., as also the head dress worn by the Cape Malays.
