1926 M. Nathan S. Afr. from Within 108Dissatisfied with the State schools, they set up their own educational system, known as the C.N.O...where, they considered, they could give their children proper instruction in Dutch.
1934 C.P. Swart Supplement to Pettman. 31C.N.O., Christelike Nationaal Onderwys — Christian National Instruction. The name given to schools founded in the Free State and Transvaal for the purpose of upholding Afrikaner ideals and the Dutch language, which, it was feared would be suppressed under the new regime after the Anglo-Boer War.

In these C.N.O. schools the Calvinist tradition was emphasized.
