bitter Karoo. Also attributive, and (occasionally) bitterbos.
1917 R. Marloth Dict. of Common Names of Plants 12Bitter bossie, Chrysocoma tenuifolia. A small shrublet hardly a foot high, which now prevails in many parts formerly occupied by the Schaapbos (Pentzia). The animals do not eat it on account of its bitter taste, but the flower tops are a welcome food when herbage is scarce.
