1971 Baraitser & Obholzer Cape Country Furn. 264Occasionally a strip of yellowwood is laid into the tapered feet..but the most important of all are the so-called Riversdale feet. They are important because..many of the cupboards with these feet are the best examples of Cape country furniture. The feet are wider than the conventional tapered leg and there are often three to support the [front of the] cupboard instead of the usual two. The middle foot is more decorative than functional...Most of the cupboards with these feet were found in the Riversdale area and although they pre-date the founding of Riversdale in 1839, we have retained the name. The hallmark of the Riverdale foot is the combination of a horizontal line of block inlay with vertical strip inlay below it.
