- In the Nguni languages, usually prefixed to the name of a person or a people, the word to which Kwa- is prefixed usually retaining its initial capital, as KwaZulu, formed on the Zulu noun stem -Zulu (see Zulu), and KwaMashu, formed on the name of Marshall Campbell, on whose farm the township of KwaMashu was built.
A prefix used to form place-names; now also prefixed to company names, as KwaTeba [see Teba], and to existing place names, as KwaNatal in historical contexts, the composite name of a proposed re-unified region of the province of Natal and the self-governing state of KwaZulu (see also KwaNatal Indaba at indaba sense 4).
