VIII. 367In 1908 Hertzog successfully introduced the so-called Hertzog Educational Bill in the Legislative Council, whereby school attendance was made compulsory between the ages of 7 and 16, mother-tongue education was prescribed up to Std. IV, and equality of both languages thereafter. This aroused strong British criticism and led to the term ‘Hertzogism’.
