Founders’ Day, noun phrase

The 6th of April, a public holiday commemorating the contributions made by the founders of the various communities making up South African society, but particularly the landing at the Cape in 1652 of Jan van Riebeeck.

Formerly called Van Riebeeck Day. Scrapped as a public holiday at the end of 1994.
1980 Govt Gaz. Vol.180 No.7060, 3The First Schedule to the principal Act is hereby amended..by the insertion immediately under the words ‘New Year’s Day’ of the words ‘Founders’ Day (sixth day of April).’
1982 Citizen 31 Dec. 9A long weekend created by Good Friday (April 1) and Family Day (April 4), could be stretched into a six day weekend simply by taking off April 5 and running the weekend into Founders’ Day (April 6).
